Estimados Colegas

Tal como nos comprometimos, enviamos la cuarta noticia o bocadillo de información acerca de qué es ABCD = Automatización de Bibliotecas y Centros de Información. Esta será la última nota sobre ABCD antes del congreso de ISIS3.

En las próximas semanas daremos otro tipo de noticias acerca de la reunón, sobre las mesas de trabajo, y respecto a las presentaciones que tendremos, tanto las propias de BIREME y UNESCO como las propuestas seleccionadas quen han enviado los participantes.

Enunciaremos brevemente los componentes que tendrá el paquete estándar que nos faltaron describir en las notas anteriores.

ABCD Home – OPAC para usuarios externos

El paquete proporcionará un Site ABCD-Home default, donde se integrarán todos los productos y servicios que suministra la versión básica, y permitirá agregar otros de ser necesario, a gusto de cada biblioteca.

ABCD-Home, será una versión de la aplicación BVS Site de BIREME adaptada para ABCD. Esta aplicación tiene un editor que permite el mantenimiento de las páginas de un Site sin necesidad de ser un programador web. Para más detalles vea

ABCD-Home tendrá tres columnas (opcional): Red Institucional / Fuentes de Información / Red de Noticias. La columna de Fuentes de Información proporcionará un metabuscador sobre todas las bases Isis registradas en el ABCD-Home, propias o ajenas, en cualquier formato que cumpla normas básicas del ABCD. Esto permitirá construir redes de información entre diferentes instituciones que usen ABCD o BVS.

Productos básicos que se entregan en el ABCD-Home en la columna de Fuentes de Información

• Catálogo de Bases Bibliográficas con las bases demo: MARC21, LILACS, CEPAL, CDS
• Catálogo de revistas tipo kardex (usará el modelo SeCS de Bireme) http://bvsmodelo.bvsalud.org/php/level.php?lang=es&component=28&item=6
• Interacción del OPAC con el sistema de préstamo por parte de los usuarios (consultas, renovación, reservas)
• Solicitud de servicios online (que deberán ser definidos por el usuario)

 Paquete de Instalación asistida

La instalación asumirá que el servidor tiene instalados y funcionando correctamente los paquetes estándar y librerias, y los directorios con los derechos necesarios.

o        Requisitos previos en el servidor

• Servidor (Apache, IIS, etc)
• PHP versión 5.x
• [opcional]  YAZ, z39.50, etc,
• Directorios:
  • Bases
  • Cgi-bin
  • Htdocs

La instalación del sistema ABCD será transparente al usuario, creando los subdirectorios necesarios, asi como sus vinculaciones. Será resonsabilidad del administrador del servidor garantizar los derechos necesarios de lectura escritura y la protección.

El paquete estándar generará los archivos .ini o .def necesarios en forma automática, de modo que la interfaz de consulta iAH, asi como todos los otros productos y servicios default queden instalados y funcionando en el ABCD Site.

La siguiente tabla presenta algunas de las funcionalidades de los módulos que faltaban describir para ABCD en notas anteriores.

 Es importante su participación en el congreso, pues allí entregaremos a todos los participantes la primera versión beta para que la sometan a pruebas. Se presentará un tutorial de cuatro horas donde recibirá paso a paso las indicaciones para instalar el sistema, hacer pruebas y verificaciones. En esos días podrá inscribirse como colaborador y comenzar a participar activamente en el desarrollo de ABCD, tanto sea en la programación de nuevos módulos, como escribiendo ejemplos, ayudas, manuales, haciendo traducciones, etc.

As promised, here comes the fourth —and last— information nugget about ABCD – Automation of Libraries and Information Centers, before the ISIS3 congress.

During the following weeks we'll present other news about the meeting itself, about workshops and presentations, from Bireme and Unesco as well as selected proposals sent by participants.

Today we will summarize the components of the standard package which we haven't described yet.

ABCD-Home – OPAC for externnal users

The package will provide a default ABCD homepage integrating all the products and services included in the basic version, with the option to add other products which the library would like to include.

ABCD-Home is a version of Bireme's BVS Site adapted to ABCD. This application includes an editor which permits the maintenance of the site without needing a web programmer. For more details, see  http://bvsmodelo.bvsalud.org/php/level.php?lang=es&component=27&item=10

ABCD-Home comes with three optional columns: Information Network / Information Sources / News Network. The Information Sources column will include a meta-searcher covering all databases registered in ABCD-Home, in any format that complies with the basic standards of ABCD. This will allow to buid information networks among different institutions using ABCD or BVS.

Basic products delivered with the Information Sources column of ABCD-Home:

•  Catalogues for the demo databases: MARC21, LILACS, CEPAL, CDS
• Catalogue of the periodicals control type (the Bireme SeCS model), which you can see at

• Interaction of the OPAC with the Circulation system for users (searches, reservations, renewals)
• Requests for online services (defined by the library)
  

Assisted Installation Package

The installation will assume that the server has all standard packages and libraries installed, and that the directories have the necessary access permits.

Pre-requisites on the server side:
         A web server (Apache, IIS, etc)
         PHP version 5.x
         Optional features like YAZ, z39.50
         Directories:

• Bases
• Cgi-bin
• Htdocs

The installation will be transparent, creating the necessary sub-directories and their linkages. It will be the responsibility of the server administrator to provide the necessary read-write permits and server protection.

The standard package will generate the necessary .ini or .def files automatically in order to get the query interface iAH and all other default products and services installed and running on the ABCD-Site.

The following table presents some of the ABCD functionalities not described previously:

Posiblemente algunos se hayan preguntado por qué en las instrucciones para envío de trabajos al III Congreso Mundial de CDS/ISIS hemos puesto como criterio de selección las aplicaciones para web. http://www.eventos.bvsalud.org/agendas/isis3/presentationSubmission.php?lang=es

 

Es que hacia allí va el mundo.

 

Observen que en los pasados meses, como preanuncios del congreso, los famosos "bocadillos" (nuggets) comentaron tres líneas de acción. 

• ABCD: un sistema de gestión integrada de bibliotecas con tecnología Internet, que está desarrollando un conjunto de personas coordinadas desde BIREME.
• ISIS-NPB: una nueva plataforma de desarrollo y arquitectura de ISIS pensada enteramente con tecnología de Internet, que está siendo financiada casi enteramente por BIREME.
• J-ISIS: podríamos decirlo en forma simple (como dice Egbert, para seres humanos), es el nuevo Winisis de UNESCO, pero en Internet.

BIREME una vez más está dando un paso de liderazgo, y definiendo políticas como lo ha hecho por los pasados 20 años. Las bibliotecas deben moverse al espacio virtual.

 

Los presentes desarrollos, en particular ABCD, están pensados como paquetes integrados de funciones y servicios de bibliotecas para funcionar en Internet. Ustedes lo bajan, lo instalan, y pronto! ? pero esto es en su primera versión, y no es el final del camino.

 

BIREME está pensando en el siguiente paso, es decir la biblioteca como servicio en Internet. Así como está el servicio de Wikipedia, así como está el espacio de trabajo de Google, ¿por qué no pensar la biblioteca como un espacio de servicios dentro de su Site? Me detengo aquí, pero si vienen al congreso, van a oír sobre varias iniciativas avanzadas que están en la estrategia de BIREME para Bibliotecas Virtuales.

 

Muchos se harán la pregunta inmediata ¿pero cuántas bibliotecas que usan ISIS están en Internet, para que pueda aún dar ese salto? No es solamente un salto tecnológico, es un salto de paradigma.

 

La respuesta es: muchas bibliotecas.

 

Esta fue la conclusión a la que llegamos el año pasado cuando solicitamos información haciendo una encuesta de Sites que tuvieran bases de datos ISIS en Internet, que NO pertenecieran a la Red BVS de Bireme, y que estuvieran usando cualquier tecnología de las disponibles para ISIS.

 

El resultado que tuvimos de la encuesta, sumado a las BVS de BIREME, indican que habría en el año 2007 más de 700 Sites, que incluyen cerca de 1.000 instituciones en todos los continentes. Que hay disponibles más de 2.000 bases de datos con más de 30 millones de registros en ISIS. A eso hay que sumarle la red SciELO, que incluye 550 periódicos científicos de 14 países, que contienen 180.000 artículos a texto completo, todo ello sustentado sobre ISIS. 

• Resultado de la encuesta, donde se registran más de 400 respuestas de 69 países, donde algunas respuestas consignan simultáneamente varias instituciones y bases de datos.

In the call for papers for the CDS/ISIS 3rd World Congress, probably some of you must have wondered why we chose Web applications as the main subject and selection criterium, as you can see at http://www.eventos.bvsalud.org/agendas/isis3/presentationSubmission.php?lang=en

 

Well, it's simply because the world is going that way.

 

During the past few months you have seen that our information teasers or nuggets about the congress have comented on three lines of action: 

• ABCD: an, integrated library management system, based on Internet technology, under development by a group of people coordinated from BIREME.
• ISIS-NBP: a new ISIS development platform and architecture conceived entirely on Internet technology, and financed almost completely by BIREME.
• J-ISIS: described simply (for human beings, as Egbert says) as the new UNESCO Winisis, but on the Internet.

BIREME is again taking the lead and defining policies as it has done for the last 20 years. And libraries must move into virtual space.

 

The current developments, particularly ABCD, are conceived as integrated packages of library functions and services to run on the Internet. You download it, you install it, and that's it! But this is the first version only, and not the end of the road.

 

BIREME is thinking of the next step, which is the library as an Internet service. Just like the Wikipedia and the Google workspace ? why not think of the library as a service area integrated in your website? I won't say more for now, but if you come to the congress, you will hear about several advanced initiatives which are part of BIREME's strategy for Virtual Libraries.

 

Many will immediately pose the following question: Hey, but how many libraries using ISIS are on the Internet and will be able to take this leap forward? It isn't just a technological step, it's a change of paradigm!

 

An the answer is: many libraries indeed.

 

This was the conclusion we arrived at last year, when we asked for information about Sites with ISIS databases on the Internet, which were NOT members of BIREME's VHL network, and were using any of the available ISIS web technologies.

 

The results of the survey, added to the VHL sites in the BIREME network, indicate that in 2007 there were more than 700 Sites, including more than 1.000 institutions, from all continents. In the call for papers for the CDS/ISIS 3rd World Congress, probably some of you must have wondered why we chose Web applications as the main subject and selection criterium, as you can see at http://www.eventos.bvsalud.org/agendas/isis3/presentationSubmission.php?lang=en

 

Well, it's simply because the world is going that way.

 

During the past few months you have seen that our information teasers or nuggets about the congress have comented on three lines of action: 

• ABCD: an, integrated library management system, based on Internet technology, under development by a group of people coordinated from BIREME.
• ISIS-NBP: a new ISIS development platform and architecture conceived entirely on Internet technology, and financed almost completely by BIREME.
• J-ISIS: described simply (for human beings, as Egbert says) as the new UNESCO Winisis, but on the Internet.

BIREME is again taking the lead and defining policies as it has done for the last 20 years. And libraries must move into virtual space.

 

The current developments, particularly ABCD, are conceived as integrated packages of library functions and services to run on the Internet. You download it, you install it, and that's it! But this is the first version only, and not the end of the road.

 

BIREME is thinking of the next step, which is the library as an Internet service. Just like the Wikipedia and the Google workspace ? why not think of the library as a service area integrated in your website? I won't say more for now, but if you come to the congress, you will hear about several advanced initiatives which are part of BIREME's strategy for Virtual Libraries.

 

Many will immediately pose the following question: Hey, but how many libraries using ISIS are on the Internet and will be able to take this leap forward? It isn't just a technological step, it's a change of paradigm!

 

An the answer is: many libraries indeed.

 

This was the conclusion we arrived at last year, when we asked for information about Sites with ISIS databases on the Internet, which were NOT members of BIREME's VHL network, and were using any of the available ISIS web technologies.

 

The results of the survey, added to the VHL sites in the BIREME network, indicate that in 2007 there were more than 700 Sites, including more than 1.000 institutions, from all continents. A todos,

 El avance sobre nuevos desarrollos en curso en la familia ISIS que Ernesto Spinak  viene promoviendo ha motivado muchas manifestaciones en diferentes dimensiones y direcciones. Digno de nota es el esfuerzo de traducción de los mensajes en hasta 3 idiomas en algunos casos.

 Sin duda, por los mensajes que pude acompañar, los avances han contribuido para la emergencia de nuevos intereses y perspectivas así como han reavivado preocupaciones y frustraciones. Como se trata de una lista abierta de intercambio de mensajes y no una lista con objetivo específico como una lista de desarrolladores por ejemplo, ella nos ofrece a cada uno la oportunidad de participar con nuestras agendas personales y profesionales.

 Ciertamente BIREME como institución, así como UNESCO, no participa de la lista. Entre tanto, me gustaría reafirmar nuestra posición en pro del acceso abierto a la información científica así como en pro del software libre, de software en código-abierto, en las diferentes licencias que se adopte. En este sentido, venimos avanzando no sin dificultades. Por ejemplo, seguimos trabajando en la limpieza del código de la plataforma CISIS que fue desarrollado y es mantenido integralmente por BIREME para atender necesidades específicas de decenas de aplicaciones nuestras y cedida a la UNESCO para el aplicativo WINISIS. Estamos también desarrollando capacidades para contar con las condiciones mínimas para realizar con calidad la gestión de sistemas en código abierto, incluyendo ABCD y ISIS NBP. Y, por cierto, tratamos de encontrar la mejor licencia para nuestra condición.

 Es nuestra firme intención llegar al congreso ISIS3 con las licencias de software en código-abierto definidas y las bases mínimas para la gestión de los sistemas ABCD y ISIS NBP en código abierto.

 Renuevo la importancia de la iniciativa que Ernesto está promoviendo para diseminar los desarrollos en curso, de mobilizar la lista para la expresión de las ideas, recomendaciones, críticas, experiencias y expectativas

Estimados colegas

Tal como prometimos, luego de una semana de silencio, hemos vuelto.

Durante los meses de abril y mayo, con la ayuda de varios colegas (Wenke, Marie-Christine, Paulo, Egbert, y algunos amigos que prefieren estar anónimos) estuvimos anunciando el congreso de ISIS3, comunicando novedades respecto a ABCD, JISIS, ISIS-NBP, y otras noticias.

El día 19 de este mes dijimos que haríamos un compás de espera de una semana para oir opiniones de toda la lista, en forma abierta y democrática.

Fue una semana interesante, en la que se recibieron 61 mensajes originales (no contamos las traducciones), provenientes de 31 participantes distintos.

Hay muchas opiniones valiosas.

Entre las cosas positivas a destacar, es que nadie monopolizó el debate ni se hicieron ataques personales. Los dos participantes más activos sólo enviaron cuatro mensajes cada uno, lo que muestra una gran moderación. El debate fue correcto, y más allá de algunos estilos un poco vehementes, hemos recopilado mucha información que estaremos procesando y compartiendo en las proximas semanas.

En primer lugar debemos aclarar que esta es una lista abierta y democrática de usuarios de Isis, no es propiedad de ninguna instutución, ni Unesco, ni Bireme, ni nadie. Las opinones que se vierten son personales, en general no representan la palabra oficial de ninguna institución. A lo sumo es ?versión oficiosa?. Para distribuir información oficial las instituciones tienen sus propias páginas. Esto incluye a quien esto escribe. Sin embargo, no hay que olvidar que esta lista es la fuente más importante de información acerca de lo que hace, piensa y precisa la comunidad de usuarios.

¿Qué decían estos 59 mensajes?

Se tocaron muchos temas, que en una lista desordenada e incompleta, podríamos anotar los más comentados:

• Tipo de licencia que tendrán las nuevas versiones.
• Servicios y funciones que integrarán el paquete ABCD.
• La amigabilidad de la aplicación.
• Necesidad de documentación apropiada, tanto de las nuevas como de las aplicaciones existentes.
• Facil instalación y adaptación de los nuevos paquetes.
• Capacitación y transferencia de conocimientos a los usuarios.
• Mantener en el futuro los rasgos más importantes del ISIS, como la indización (FST) y los formatos de salida (PFT).
• Cómo se garantizará el soporte técnico.
• Plataforma de desarrollo que se usarán en las nuevas arquitecturas.
• Consultas técnicas sobre ISIS-NPB, y JSIS.
• Qué relación hay entre JISIS, ISIS-NBP, IsisDlls.
• Entregar el ABCD, etc, con modelos o demos que sean aplicables a la vida real.
• Cumplimiento con normas ? y allí enviaron una lista interminable de acrónimos que comenzando en DCMI y terminando en Z39.50 pudimos contar por lo menos 18!!!!

De todas las contribuciones enviadas, quiero destacar una que personalmente me resultó muy simpática y la estoy usando. La envió un colega de Togo,

bien un chat qu'on a caché dans un sac"
(trad. libre: No es fácil vender un gato adentro de una bolsa cerrada).

Totalmente de acuerdo. No se preocupen, ABCD et al, no son gatos en una bolsa.

As we promised, after a week of silent listening we are back again.

During the months of May and June, with the help of several friends (Wenke, Marie-Christine, Paulo, Egbert and others who prefer to remain anonymous) we have been announcing the ISIS3 congress and sending out news about ABCD, JISIS, ISIS-NBP and other things.

On june 19th we said we would give you a week to hear opinions from all list memebers, in an open and democratic way.

It was an interesting week, in which we received 61 original messages (not counting translations) from 31 different participants.

There are many valuable opinions.

Among the positive aspects, we would like to point out that nobody monopolised the debate or made personal attacks. The two most active participants sent only four messages each, showing great moderation. The debate was correct, and apart from a few somewhat fervent styles, we have collected a lot of information to process and to share with you during the next weeks.

First of all we must make clear that this is an open and democratic list of ISIS users. It is not the property of any particular institution, be it Unesco, Bireme or anybody else. The opinions expressed are personal and generally do not represent the official word of any organisation, (at the most, there might be authorised statements). For official information, each organisation has its own web sites. This condition includes the author of these lines. Nevertheless, one must not forget that this discussion list is THE most important source of information about what the ISIS community of users are doing, thinking and needing.

What was said in the 61 messages?

Many subjects were mentioned. A list of the most commented ones, still unfinished and in no particular order, includes:

• What kind of licencing will the new versions have.
• Services and functions of the ABCD package.
• Userfriendliness of the applications.
• Ease of installation and adaptation of the new packages.
• Training and transfer of knowledge to the users.
• Maintenance of the most important features of ISIS, such as the indexing (FST) and the display formats (PFTs).
• How will technical support be guaranteed.
• Development platforms used by the new architectures.
• Technical questions about ISIS-NBP and JISIS.
• What is the relationship between JISIS, ISIS-NBP and ISISDLL
• ABCD etc. should be delivered with models or demos applicable in real life.
• The applications should conform to standards – and a long list of these, from DCMI to Z39.50 we counted at least 18 standards!!!

The progress on new developments in the ISIS family Ernesto Spinak is sharing with us, has triggered manifestations in different dimensions and directions. Particularly noteworthy is the effort to translate messages in up to 3 languages in some cases.

Clearly, from the messages I have read, the ongoing development has contributed to the emergence of new interests and perspectives as well as to revive worries and frustrations. Since this is a general discussion list and not a list with particular purposes —such as a developer's group for example— it offers each of us the opportunity to participate with our own personal and professional agendas.

For sure, BIREME, as an institution, as well as UNESCO, does not participate in the list. Nevertheless, I would like to reaffirm our position in favor of open access to scientific information as well as of free software and open source software, under different licenses to be adopted. In this sense, we are progressing not without difficulties. For example, we are still working on the cleaning of CISIS code, a platform fully developed and maintained by BIREME for specific needs of dozens of our own applications, and shared with UNESCO for the Winisis application. We are also developing capacity to reach basic conditions to carry out the management of open source systems, including ABCD and ISIS-NBP. And surely, we are trying to find the best licensing for our condition.

It is our firm intention to come to the ISISI3 congress with the open source software licenses already defined and with the basic conditions established for the management of the ABCD and ISIS-NBP codes under open source.

I would like to stress again the importance of the initiative Ernesto is promoting to spread information about the ongoing developments as well as to mobilize the ISIS list for the expression of ideas, recommendations, criticism, experiences and expectations.

We also take this opportunity to renew the invitation to all of you to participate actively in the upcoming ISIS3 congress.
